Safety & Resettlement Tips for Jamaicans Returning Home

Plastic litter on a beach

Moving back to Jamaica after years abroad is exciting, but the first few weeks bring risks many returnees don’t expect. Airport arrivals, container deliveries and new routines can all draw unwanted attention. These six tips from our logistics team, drawing on guidance in the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s safety handbook for returning residents, will help you settle in safely.

1. Keep your return plans private

Share your arrival date, shipping schedule and address only with people who need them. Avoid posting about your move, your container or new purchases on social media until you are settled. Announcements of a returnee with a full container can make you a target.

2. Arrange airport pickup in advance

Have a trusted family member or a licensed, pre-booked transport service meet you. Don’t accept rides or help with luggage from strangers in the arrivals hall. Keep cash, passports and documents on your person, not in checked bags.

3. Plan container delivery carefully

Your container is most at risk on delivery day. Schedule delivery in daylight, have people you trust on site, and unload into a lockable space the same day. Do not leave boxes labelled with their contents on the street or in view.

4. Secure your home before your goods arrive

If you are moving into a new or long-empty property, fit grilles, solid doors and good locks before delivery. Consider lighting, an alarm or a monitored security service. Get to know trusted neighbours early; they are often your best security.

5. Be careful with money and paperwork

  • Use a local bank account and avoid carrying large sums of cash.
  • Be wary of anyone offering to “fast-track” customs or land titles for a fee. Deal only with licensed customs brokers and registered attorneys.
  • Verify any land or property seller through the National Land Agency before paying.

6. Register and stay connected

Let your local police station know you have moved into the community, and save emergency numbers in your phone (police: 119). Join a community or returning residents’ group to learn local tips and stay informed.
